Bangkok Bookcrossers

The next Bangkok Bookcrossers meeting is this Tuesday, March 4th, at 6:30pm. We'll be meeting at Bert's, located in the ground floor of the Zen department store at Central World.

If you're coming from inside Central World, Bert's is on your left as you enter the cosmetics section. If you take the skytrain, the easiest way to get to Bert's is to go to Chidlom station and take the skywalk to the first Central World exit. Instead of taking the escalator into Central World, go down the stairs, up onto the plaza in front of Central World and walk straight ahead. Bert's has an outside entrance--you should be able to see it from the skywalk.

Bookmooch

Bookmooch.com is an innovative site that allows readers to put their own books up for grabs; for each book sent out to another member, you receive points that can be used to “mooch” books you want off someone else’s virtual shelf.

Dictionary.co.uk defines "mooch" as: "to obtain something without paying for it, or to borrow something without intending to return it" as in "You're old enough to get a job and stop mooching off your family."

Just adding books to your online inventory earns points toward future mooching: for every book added, you receive 1/10th of a point. You also receive one point for confirming that a book you mooched has arrived safe and sound.

Mooching books domestically costs one point, while mooching a book from a user in another country costs three points.

Members create wishlists so the website can automatically notify them when books they would like to mooch become available. Act quickly, though—popular titles are often claimed within moments.

For more information, go to http://www.bookmooch.com/.

Next bookcrossing

Bangkok Bookcrossers is an informal group that normally meets the first Tuesday of every month to chat and exchange books. Unlike other book groups, we don’t pick a book for the month and discuss it. Instead, we get together to talk and exchange books we’ve already read.

You can join us at our next meeting: Tuesday, January 8, 2008 (6:30 p.m.)

NEW LOCATION: We will once again meet at Bert’s, located in Zen on the ground floor of Central World.

If you can’t make it to our evening Bangkok Bookcrossers meetings, don't worry. In addition to our regular first Tuesday of the month get-togethers, Bangkok Bookcrossers will also hold occasional weekday afternoon meetings.

Our next afternoon session will be on Friday, December 21, at 2:00 pm, at the Starbucks on Langsuan Road.

Hope to see you there!

Bangkok BookCrossing

On Sunday, my friends back home organized a simultaneous bookscrossing meeting in three major cities and, as I am part of a bookblog that posts daily book reviews, I also wanted to organize a similar meeting in Thailand. The idea was to have it on the same day and, if possible, at the same time! Unfortunately, unexpected circumstances had our Thai bookcrossing meeting cancelled! But it was too late for me to announce back home that I have failed. The whole country was expecting news from “abroad”!

So, I did a search on the internet and found Bangkok Bookcrosing, a small group of book enthusiasts who were planning to meet in just two days! I was saved! I HAD to attend the meeting and then report back to my people half way across the world! I signed up at their Yahoo Group, got the date, time, location and directions and took out a book off my bookshelves (Congo by Michael Crichton) to set it free during our meeting.

I cancelled my private students for the day and, as soon as I got home after a hard day’s work at school, I showered, changed and jumped on my motorbike. The meeting was to take place at JuppA, a restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 16, near Asok BTS station, so I had a long way to go. I parked my motorbike at Mo Chit and, for 40 baht, I took the skytrain to Asok.

From left to right: Tina, Erin, Rebecca, Erin, Sarah and Anette.

Once there, I introduced myself to the 5 American women that were already there, and, as soon as we started to present the books we had brought, another English woman showed up, increasing the bookcrossers’ numbers to SEVEN.

When the presentations were over, each of us chose some books and the “left overs” were put aside for later meetings. Maybe some of the “unwanted” books will be donated to The Neilson Heys Library.

One of the books that was presented during the meeting (but not put in circulation!) was Bangkok Blondes, a collection of short stories, articles, poems and what not written by memebers of the Bangkok Women’s Writers Club. I’ll write about it in a different post. In the meantime, you can buy it online or at any Bookazine bookstore.
